Just when I think that the garden fun is over, carrots come along.


  
 I don't like carrots in the spring or summer.  They are bitter and flavorless.  Whatever frost does to kale, it does it to carrots.  After a few frosts they are just so sweet and crisp.  You know how those juicy home grown tomatoes are nothing like the pink mealy ones at the store? Carrots are the same.  I just wish I had grown more.

I love the rhythm of eating with the seasons.  I tend carefully to a big patch of kale all summer long, rarely harvesting even a few leaves.  There is so much variety in the summer months that I deny myself the kale so that it becomes this forbidden green, only to be picked after a few frosts.  By February I am usually VERY sick of eating kale, but right now it is a succulent delicacy that I very much look forward to.  Much like apple pie for breakfast.

two seasons

(yes I'm still here. I have just been without a camera for the past month or so. We have been happily reunited now and glad to be back here.)

My life is separated into two different seasons; gardening and crafting.

I am in that transition time right now.  Putting away the last of the food, sowing cover crops, putting away the tools and pulling out the sewing machine, needles and fibers.
